US Telecom Company Lumen Removes Salt Typhoon Hackers from Network

Lumen, one of the major U.S. telecommunications companies, has successfully removed the Chinese hacker group Salt Typhoon from its network. According to Lumen’s spokesperson, Mark Molzen, an independent forensic analysis confirmed the hackers have been ejected, with no evidence of customer data being accessed during the breach.

What Happened with Salt Typhoon?

Salt Typhoon, a hacker group linked to China, compromised at least nine U.S. telecommunications firms, including Lumen. This breach prompted immediate action, and now, Lumen assures its customers that their networks are secure once again. Other major telecoms like AT&T and Verizon have also cleared their networks after similar attacks.

T-Mobile, another victim of Salt Typhoon, confirmed last month that no evidence showed hackers were still in its systems.

Did Salt Typhoon Access Customer Data?

Fortunately, Lumen assures its users that no customer data was compromised. Mark Molzen confirmed that the breach was contained, and no sensitive customer information was accessed by the hackers.

Other Telecoms Affected

Though Lumen managed to secure its network, other U.S. telecom giants weren’t as fortunate. Here’s an update on the situation with AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile:

  • AT&T and Verizon reported that a small number of high-profile customers had their communications accessed during the breach.
  • According to U.S. officials, fewer than 100 individuals were targeted, mostly high-ranking officials and politicians based in Washington, D.C.

The Road Ahead for Telecom Networks

The Salt Typhoon attack has highlighted the need for stronger cybersecurity in the telecom industry. U.S. companies like Lumen, AT&T, and Verizon have strengthened their defenses and taken swift action to prevent future breaches.
