Intel AI Leader Sachin Katti Joins OpenAI to Build AGI Infrastructure
Intel AI Chief Sachin Katti Departs for OpenAI
Sachin Katti, Intel’s Chief Technology and Artificial Intelligence Officer, is leaving the chipmaker to join OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT. At OpenAI, Katti will focus on building compute infrastructure for artificial general intelligence (AGI), a form of AI modeled on human intelligence.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Katti expressed gratitude:
“Very grateful for the tremendous opportunity and experience at Intel over the last 4 years leading networking, edge computing, and AI.”
Intel confirmed his departure, announcing that CEO Lip-Bu Tan will take over leadership of the AI and Advanced Technologies Groups previously managed by Katti.
OpenAI Welcomes Katti
OpenAI President and co-founder Greg Brockman shared on X:
“Incredibly excited to work with him on designing and building our compute infrastructure, which will power our AGI research and scale its applications to benefit everyone.”
Katti will leverage his experience at Intel to support OpenAI’s AGI initiatives, ensuring robust infrastructure to scale AI safely and efficiently.
Katti’s Contributions at Intel
Katti joined Intel in early 2023 and quickly rose to lead the Network and Edge Group. He was appointed Chief Technology and AI Officer by CEO Lip-Bu Tan, responsible for:

- Relationships with startups and developer ecosystems
During his tenure, Intel retooled its data center AI strategy under Tan, following modest revenue results from its Gaudi chips. Katti also contributed to advancements in energy-efficient GPUs and AI systems architecture, announced at the 2025 OCP Global Summit.
Academic and Entrepreneurial Background
Katti is also an adjunct professor at Stanford University, contributing to research on machine learning at the edge.
Prior to Intel, he was co-founder and CEO of Kumu Networks, a company focused on revolutionizing wireless systems.
Recent Intel Executive Departures
Katti’s move comes amid several high-profile Intel departures, including:
- John Kalvin, former Global Channel Chief
- Saurabh Kulkarni, VP of Data Center AI Product Management
- Rob Bruckner, 25-year Intel veteran, now leading the Platform Engineering Group
Conclusion
Sachin Katti’s transition from Intel to OpenAI signals a growing focus on AGI and next-generation AI infrastructure. With his leadership experience in AI, edge computing, and data center technologies, Katti is expected to play a pivotal role in advancing OpenAI’s mission to scale artificial general intelligence safely and effectively.
